A full day of driving will bring us to the Boothbay Harbor Inn, a harbor-front hotel, for the next two evenings. Dinner this evening will be included at the hotel's restaurant.
After breakfast at the hotel, we can look forward to an eventful day. We will first have a guided tour of the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. At the Gardens we will see glorious formal gardens, impressive stonework, man-made waterfalls and ponds and an overall design that's both appealing and impressive. Then this afternoon we will enjoy an incredible trip on the Atlantic Ocean as we look for a variety of whale species. This is sure to be an awesome experience as these massive creatures feed and frolic in their natural environment! This evening we will enjoy dinner at the Tugboat Inn.
Today, after breakfast at the hotel, we depart and travel north along the coast. We will visit the Maine State Prison Showroom which sells wood products made by inmates. At Owls Head Transportation Museum you will see a collection of antique yet still working modes of transport - carriages, bicycles, autos and airplanes. Just up from Owls Head is Camden, a shipbuilding town dating from the late 18th century. At Camden Hills State Park we will take the short road up Mount Battie for fine views of Penobscot Bay. We will then continue to Bar Harbor. Our lodging for the next two days will be at the Best Western Acadia Park Inn. Dinner this evening will be included at a local restaurant.
After an early breakfast at the hotel, we will be met by a local step-on guide who will point out all the highlights of Mount Desert Island's Acadia National Park. The glacier-carved island is a phenomenal geological grab bag of mountains, lakes, cliffs, forests, beaches, rugged shoreline and the only true fjord, Somes Sound, on the U.S. Atlantic Coast. Included in our tour will be some of the most popular sites including Thunder Hole, Otter Cliffs and Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the Atlantic Coast north of Brazil. Later today, we will enjoy a harbor cruise where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful views. This evening we will enjoy a Lobster-bake with all the fixins!
This morning, after breakfast, we must check-out and begin our homeward journey. Before departing Mount Desert Island, we will stop at the Lobster Hatchery for a glimpse into this unusual industry. As we travel south along the coast we will stop in Bath to visit the Maine Maritime Museum, which focuses on Maine's seafaring history. We'll travel to South Portland and the location of our lodging this evening.CB
After breakfast at the hotel, we will depart for home. With stops for meals and rest, arrival home is scheduled for later this evening.CB
