Today we depart on our southern journey, with overnight lodging near Charlotte, NC. The Drury Inn Kickback dinner will be available at the hotel this evening.
Continue south to Macon, Georgia, a city known for its architecture. We'll tour Macon's Historic District, including a visit to the Cannonball House. Step inside this classic Green Revival mansion built in 1853. This was the only house damaged during the Civil War when it was struck by a Hotchkiss shell during a federal attack in 1864. Restored with period furnishings, it houses a Civil War Museum and recreated meeting room of the world's first secret society for women, Alpha Dela Pi and Phi Mu sororities. This evening we will feel like royalty as we step through the doors of the Hay House, a National Historic Landmark also referred to as the "Palace of the South". Dinner will be included at the Hay House after our guided tour.
We'll begin our day riding the Cherry Blossom Trail. Sit back and enjoy mother nature's spectacular blooms as we drive along in the comfort of our motorcoach. While on the trail, we'll view southern mansions, streets lined with cherry trees, and pink bows galore. Along this meandering route through the historic districts of downtown, mid-town, and north Macon residential areas, we'll highlight the areas of Macon that are most densely populated with cherry trees like the Ingleside area, Wesleyan Woods neighborhood, and Riverside Drive. We'll also stop for a photo op at the former home of "The Father of Cherry Blossoms", the late William Fickling and Fickling Farm where the trees were propagated and distributed to residents of Macon annually. Next, we will tour the Museum at Capricorn, located in Mercer Music at Capricorn, which interprets the history and impact of Capricorn Records and Capricorn Sound Studios in the context of Macon's rich music heritage. More than 1,200 square feet of artifacts, murals, and interactive digital kiosks bring Capricorn's story to life. This afternoon you will have time to enjoy the Mulberry Street Arts & Crafts Festival, presented by the Middle Georgia Art Association. Thousands of visitors and hundreds of vendors from across the country congregate to celebrate this exciting festival! Dinner this evening will be included at a local restaurant.
This morning we will make our way to Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia, our lodging for this evening. We'll join our guide for a tour of Callaway Gardens including Callaway Brothers Azalea Bowl, Overlook Azalea Garden, and Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center. It's safe to say that Callaway Gardens is known for its azaleas. Time permitting, we may visit the Ida Cason Callaway Memorial Chapel, Mr. Callaway's Garden, and the Birds of Prey exhibit.
This morning we will depart for Charlotte, NC. The Drury Inn kickback dinner will be available at the hotel this evening.
