Day 1 & 2
Today we begin our tour by traveling west to Columbus, Ohio. Tomorrow we will continue on near Iowa City, Iowa.B
Today we travel through the state of Iowa and on to South Dakota. In Sioux City, Iowa we will visit the Louis and Clark Interpretive Center, which showcases permanent exhibits about the Corps of Discovery's time in the present-day Sioux City area. The expedition as a military operation comes to life in exhibits that use interactive devices. We will spend the night in Mitchell, South Dakota.CB
This morning we will travel to the Black Hills of South Dakota, encompassing a million acres. A visit to Badlands National Park allows for views of the many rock formations, wildlife and plant life. While here we will look for the different types of wildlife that line the park: the pronghorn, bison, mountain sheep and prairie dogs. We will then visit the Wall Drug Store in Wall, South Dakota where we will have an unusual, yet unique lunch. Next we will travel to Keystone, South Dakota where we will visit beautiful Mount Rushmore National Monument. Mount Rushmore is a timeless monument, not only to our national pride, but to the patriotism and determination of a sculptor and the miners he guided in carving a mountain into a work of art. We will spend the night in Rapid City, South Dakota.CB, L
This morning we will view Devils Tower National Monument, the nation's first National Monument. Its centerpiece is a colossal cylinder of bare gray rock that rises alone from the gentle forested landscape of the Black Hills. After lunch we will travel over the Big Horn Mountain Range on to Shell Canyon for an afternoon break at the overlook. We will travel on to Cody, Wyoming where we will spend the night.B
Today is one of the most beautiful sightseeing days that you will encounter as we journey to the nation's first National Park, Yellowstone. Old Faithful and the majority of the world's geysers are preserved here. They are the main reason the park was established in 1872 as America's first national park - an idea that spread worldwide. The park is a mountainous wildland - home to grizzly bears, wolves, and herds of bison and elk and is the core of one of the last, nearly intact, natural ecosystems in the Earth's temperate zone. Our morning break will be at Artists Point at the lower falls before having lunch on your own at Old Faithful. This afternoon we will see more of the park before we continue to our overnight lodging in Bozeman, Montana.
This morning we travel a short distance to Butte, Montana. Here we visit the World Museum of Mining which preserves the rich historical legacy of mining and the related culture of Butte and the surrounding region. While here, we will also visit Berkeley Pit, a former open pit copper mine. Then, it's on to Missoula, Montana to spend the night. Upon arrival we will enjoy a tour of Smoke Jumpers Base Aerial Fire Depot. A guided tour of the base offers firsthand accounts of fire fighting and smoke jumping.B
Today we will be traveling north to Flathead Lake and the beautiful Flathead Valley en route to Glacier National Park. Come and experience Glacier's pristine forests, alpine meadows, rugged mountains, and spectacular lakes. Relive the days of old through historic chalets, lodges, transportation, and stories of Native Americans. Lunch at McDonald Lodge will be included before traveling the "Going to the Sun" Road, through Glacier National Park to St. Mary. Later this afternoon we will travel across the border into Canada. You will need your passport. We will travel on to Calgary and spend the night.B, L
This morning enjoy Calgary at your leisure before attending the Calgary Stampede for the afternoon rodeo. After the rodeo we will depart for Banff, the location of our lodging for the next two evenings. Banff National Park is Canada's oldest national park, encompassing numerous glaciers and ice fields, dense forest and alpine landscapes. After dinner this evening you will be free to enjoy Banff at your leisure.B, D
This morning, after breakfast at the hotel, we will travel a short distance through Banff National Park to Lake Louise, Canada's "Diamond in the Wilderness". The Lake Louise area abounds with spectacular scenery, from glaciers to waterfalls. This afternoon we will enjoy a scenic drive along the Canadian Rockies en route to the Columbia Icefield for a Snowcoach Tour. This tour takes you onto the surface of the Athabasca Glacier by Ice Explorer, a massive vehicle specially designed for glacial travel. An experienced driver-guide shares a wealth of fascinating information about glaciers, icefields and their impact on our environment during this one hour and 20 minute journey. Mid-point in the tour, you can safely step out onto the glacier and take in the most stunning alpine and glacial vistas. This evening will be free to enjoy Banff at your leisure.B
This morning we head southeast and cross back into the United States. We will visit the Charles M. Russell Museum in Great Falls, MT, then continuing to our evening lodging near Great Falls.B
Today will be an all-day travel day from Great Falls, MT to Bismarck, ND. This evening's lodging will be in Bismarck, ND.CB
Continuing east, our lodging for this evening is in Bloomington, MN. En route we will visit Mall of America for dinner on your own and free time for shopping. As one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world, Mall of America features 520 stores, 50 restaurants and attractions galore!CB
