Day 1

Experience the lavish lifestyle of the early 1900s as you journey through the most luxurious part of town on a trolley excursion, including the eastern beachfront. Marvel at the grandeur of the wide streets and expansive properties that make up Cape May's east side, once marketed as "New Cape May" during the turn of the century. Today, new, beachfront second homeowners have continued the tradition, running the gamut from the mere wealthy to the fabulously rich. Along Beach Drive, a guide will provide a detailed commentary on the history and architecture of the East Cape May Development areas from the early 20th century. Next, we'll enjoy a tour of the Physick Estate. This themed tour, Down the Shore: Summers in Victorian Cape May, offers a glimpse into the diverse array of activities that entertained visitors and the Physick family during the Victorian era. Discover their favorite pastimes, including dancing, fishing, golfing, and concerts. Find out how they stayed cool during hot summers with ocean bathing and indulging in ice cream. Plus, get an insider's look at the architectural features of the house that were specifically designed to combat high temperatures, showcasing the resourcefulness of the past. Included in our visit is the History of Ice Cream exhibit. This exhibit celebrates summer's favorite treat. At the beginning of the 1800s, ice cream was an elite and expensive dish in flavors like parmigiano and asparagus. By the end of the 1880s, ice cream was adored by everyone in flavors like vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. Some of our favorite dishes, like the ice cream cone, the ice cream sundae, and the banana boat are Victorian inventions! See an authentic 1898 ice cream maker and other artifacts as well as a reproduction of a Victorian ice cream wagon. Discover the diverse innovators and pioneers of American ice cream, the development of the ice cream scoop & commercial ice cream freezer, and more! After our time at the Physick Estate, we'll head to the Washington Inn for an included lunch and an Etiquette and Manners presentation. Etiquette was an important part of the Victorian era. Using Victorian artifacts and a place setting for a full-course Victorian meal, costumed living history interpreters will review the "how's" and "why's" of Victorian manners and etiquette. There will be some free time at the Washington Street Mall before we depart for home.
