Day 1
Today we will head for the Blue Ridge Mountains and Abingdon, VA. With stops for rest and lunch on the way, this will be the location of our lodging for the next three evenings and the start of our Crooked Road Adventure. Dinner will be included at a local restaurant this evening.
DDay 2
After breakfast, our morning begins with a tasting tour at Abingdon Olive Oil Co. Beginning with a variety of pairings while learning the history, health, and cooking benefits of olive oil, and ending with a taste of ice cream for a little sweetness. Afterwards, we will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before heading to the 1860 Greek Revival style Fields-Penn House Museum, one of Abingdon's most recognizable homes. This afternoon's entertainment is a matinee show at the Barter Theatre, one of the longest-running professional theaters in the nation. Dinner will be included at a local restaurant this evening.
B, L, DDay 3
Following breakfast this morning, we will head to Bristol, VA. We will tour the Birthplace of Country Music Museum, which tells the story of our music heritage, and continues to influence music around the world. Afterwards will be lunch on our own, and time to explore Bristol VA, and Bristol, TN. Stand in both states at once along the "The Golden Line", a perfect photo op! The highlight of the afternoon will be a lap around the high-banked track known as "The World's Fastest Half-Mile!", at the famous Bristol Motor Speedway. We'll also see Pit Road and "Thunder Valley", the Bristol Dragway. Grab a partner as we head back to Abingdon for some square dancing at the Southwest Virginia Cultural Center. Traditional square dance calls and a toe-tapping band ensures fun for all ages and levels of dancers. Once we've learned a few dance moves, we'll learn new cooking skills in an Appalachian Cooking Class! Enjoy a delicious meal made by the professional chef instructor, while learning about Appalachian cuisine and how to transform fresh seasonal ingredients into Southern creations. Afterwards will be the opportunity to "come sit a spell" and wind down the evening with stories of culture from an Appalachian Storyteller. Storytelling in Appalachia is as old as the hills.
B, DDay 4
After breakfast we will depart from our hotel and southwest Virginia to return home. With stops for rest and lunch enroute, arrival home is planned for later this evening.
