Day 1
Our adventure into the Finger Lakes begins with lunch on our own in the village of Watkins Glen. Afterward, we will stop at Watkins Glen State Park, the most famous of the Finger Lakes State Parks. Our visit to Watkins Glen State Park is self-guided and sturdy walking shoes are suggested. As we head out of town, views of Seneca Lake dominate the drive. Our next stop is at Lakewood Vineyards for a tasting of their award-winning wines. We arrive in Geneva at our hotel for the next 3 nights, 41 Lakefront. This hotel is directly on Seneca Lake with a paved walkway along the lake. Dinner this evening will be included at the hotel.
Day 2
After breakfast we will depart on our historic Geneva driving tour and then head to Lazy Acres Alpaca Farm. Here we will enjoy a walking tour while learning about the different kinds of alpacas and alpaca fleece. There will be time to visit with these adorable animals and browse the shop. After lunch on our own, we'll board the Canandaigua Lady for a narrated cruise on Canandaigua Lake. Canandaigua means "the chosen place" in the Native American language. This lake is the most expensive lake property in the United States, with several famous people owning homes there. Ready for a sweet treat? Sweet Expressions is a local candy shop with an enthusiastic owner who loves telling the story of her life with chocolate. Delicious samples will entice us! Dinner is included at New York Kitchen. The chef will demonstrate making the salad dressing and the dessert that we will enjoy with dinner. Televisions give everyone a perfect view of the process.
Day 3
After breakfast we'll check-out of the hotel and head to Lively Run Goat Dairy Farm and Creamery for a visit with the goats and a sampling of goat cheese made right on the farm! A buffet lunch will be included at Ventosa Vineyards, followed by a tasting of their Italian style wines. Be sure to check out the views of Seneca Lake from the balcony. Next, we will go to Rose Hill Mansion for a guided tour. This Greek Revival style building was once the foremost farm in New York State. After a stop at the Finger Lakes Welcome Center, we will return to the hotel to enjoy the evening on our own and have dinner at our leisure. From the hotel, you can walk along the lake or just sit and enjoy the view with a drink.
Day 4
After breakfast we will depart from our hotel and head to Deer Haven Park. It is home to the world's largest herd of white deer and was once the Seneca Army Depot. We will hear the history of the military in the area, as well as the story of the white deer. Traveling along Cayuga Lake brings us to Taughannock Falls, the tallest waterfall in the northeast. We will have an opportunity to get off the bus and take photos. Lunch is on our own at Ithaca Commons, a pedestrian area with shops and restaurants in a busy college town. We will stop at Ithaca Falls, the last of 7 waterfalls along the Cascadilla Gorge. This is somewhat of a rough walk and sturdy shoes are suggested. With a stop for dinner enroute, arrival home is scheduled for later this evening.
