Each year in early May, more than half a million visitors descend on Holland, Michigan for its annual Tulip Time Festival. Since 1929, the town has been honoring its Dutch heritage and the Netherlands' most famous export with a yearly floral centerpiece comprised of millions of brightly colored tulips. If you love flowers, food, and festivals, this tour is for you. Day 1
Pennsylvania's springtime panorama will provide the sights as we travel westward to our lodging for the evening in Westlake, OH. Stops for rest and lunch will be made enroute. Dinner is at our leisure this evening.
Day 2
An early departure will begin the day, so be sure to take advantage of the continental breakfast at the hotel. We'll travel into Michigan with an arrival in Holland by the afternoon. Upon arrival there will be time for lunch on our own before we visit Veldheer's Tulip Farm and De Klomp Wooden Shoe & Delft Factory. With over 6 million tulips, it's a great opportunity to see fields of beautiful flowers at Holland's only Tulip Farm. We will then check-in to our lodging for the next three nights. This evening we will enjoy an included dinner and a show.
CB, DDay 3
After breakfast, we will visit Holland's Icon, Windmill Island Gardens. This is where America's only authentic, working Dutch windmill is located and where we can discover how this machine produces flour for the community. We can also see over 100,000 tulips in bloom, visit The Post House (an exact replica of a 14th century wayside inn), listen to the antique Amsterdam street organ & learn how it works, ride the antique Dutch Carousel that features hand-carved & painted wooden horses, view the miniature Little Netherlands Village display made by early settlers, and visit the gift shop. After free time for lunch on our own we will visit Nelis' Dutch Village. The park is like a step back into the Netherlands, complete with authentic Dutch architecture, flowering gardens, canals, and windmills. The history and culture of the Dutch come to life as associates dressed in authentic costumes and wooden shoes demonstrate Old Dutch traditions. After an included dinner we will enjoy special musical entertainment.
CB, DDay 4
After breakfast, a full day at the Tulip Time Festival is in store for us today! A guided driving tour of Holland will familiarize us with the town and our step-on guide will point out all the highlights. After an included lunch at one of the local churches, we will find our reserved seats for the special themed parade. Thousands of spectators line the streets of downtown to watch amazing floats, marching bands, Dutch Dancers, and numerous organizations present their finest in over 2 miles of pure celebration. We will then return to the hotel to freshen up before returning downtown for dinner on our own. This evening we will enjoy musical entertainment.
CB, LDay 5
We'll enjoy a continental breakfast at the hotel before we check-out and depart for Akron, OH, the center of the global rubber empire and corporate home of Goodyear. Upon arrival in Akron, we will have lunch on our own before a self-guided tour Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, which is considered one of the finest examples of Tudor Revival architecture in the country. Built from 1912-1915 for Frank A. Seiberling, co-founder of Goodyear and founder of the Seiberling Rubber companies, it contains art treasures from around the world. After our tour of this impressive house and gardens, we will check-in to our overnight accommodations. Dinner is on our own this evening.
CBDay 6
Following breakfast, we'll check-out and head to Fellows Riverside Garden in Youngstown, Ohio. There will be free-time to explore the twelve-acre display garden, the Education & Visitor center with museum and galleries,take an elevator to the top of the observation tower, visit the Shop in the Gardens, and enjoy lunch on own in theGarden Café. With a rest stop enroute, arrival home is scheduled for early evening.
