After breakfast we'll travel to a cheese shop in Monroe, WI - the Swiss cheese capital of the hemisphere. Here you can shop for cheese, snacks, and gifts. (You may want to bring along a small cooler/insulated bag for your cheese purchases.) Next, we'll travel to the village of New Glarus which is known for its Swiss heritage and old-world architecture. While here we'll have free time for shopping and lunch on our own. A tour of the National Mustard Museum will be included before checking-in to our hotel near Madison, WI. Dinner will be on our own.
BDay 4
Following breakfast we will have a self-guided tour of the House on the Rock. This extraordinary multi-level home stands atop a chimney-like rock 450 feet above the Wyoming Valley. The house is a modern architectural wonderland with several pools of running water, six massive fireplaces, and one entire wall of windows jutting out over the valley below; trees grow from the foundation through the roof. (If you'd like to play music from the music machines, be sure to bring $1 bills to exchange for tokens to use to make the music play.) We'll have lunch on our own this afternoon before we travel to the Wisconsin Dells where we will enjoy a boat cruise of the Upper Dells. After checking-in to our lodging in Wisconsin Dells for the evening, we can look forward to some special entertainment and an included dinner.
CB, DDay 5
After breakfast we'll depart the Wisconsin Dells area and take a scenic Lake Michigan coastal route to St. Ignace, MI, located on Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Three of the world's largest freshwater lakes (Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, and Lake Superior) form the shoreline of the Upper Peninsula. Stops for rest & lunch will be made enroute to St. Ignace. Our lodging for the next two nights will be at the Breakers Resort. Dinner will be at our leisure after check-in.
BPlease Note:
Lodging at Breakers Resort requires the ability to do stairs. There is an elevator to your floor, however there will be 7 steps to get to your room.
Day 6
Following an early morning breakfast we'll board the ferry that will take us to a full day of sightseeing on charming Mackinac Island. Since automobiles are not permitted on the island, our sightseeing will begin with a narrated ride on a horse-drawn carriage. Next, we'll explore Old Fort Mackinac on our own. Situated high on a bluff above the harbor, the fort dates from 1780 and is preserved as a museum. A "Grand" buffet lunch at the historic Mackinac Grand Hotel is included before some afternoon free time to stroll the shops along Huron Street at your leisure before we ferry back to St. Ignace for the evening. Dinner will be on our own.
CB, LDay 7
After breakfast, we set off to view two lighthouses - Old Presque Isle Lighthouse & New Presque Isle Lighthouse. Old Presque Isle Lighthouse was built in 1840 and operated until 1871 when the keepers moved to the New Presque Isle Lighthouse, which is the tallest lighthouse tower accessible by the public on the Great Lakes. There will be free time for lunch on our own this afternoon. Later, we'll enjoy a self-guided visit to the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center where we will experience the maritime history, shipwrecks, and archaeology of the Great Lakes. Here we'll see a full-size replica of a wooden Great Lakes schooner & shipwreck where visitors can walk the decks, feel a Great Lakes storm, and touch the massive timbers of the boat resting on the lake bottom without getting wet! We will then travel to our overnight accommodations at Thunder Bay Resort. This evening we will have a narrated horse-drawn carriage tour of the Elk Preserve followed by a five-course gourmet dinner at Elk Antler Log Cabin.
