Today we will make our way to Maine for a stay in the south coast Maine region. Check-in to the lovely Meadowmere Resort with luxurious accommodations, beautiful gardens, indoor and outdoor pools. The hotel is located within a 10 minute walk of the shoreline walking path along the coast and the shops in Ogunquit Village. Upon arrival at the resort the Maine Tour "lobsterette" will provide each passenger with a souvenir hat. You will enjoy a festive and traditional lobster dinner with all the fixings tonight! Feast on fresh Maine lobster (or BBQ chicken or vegetarian casserole if you prefer) in a casual setting with sing-along entertainment.
Enjoy a deluxe continental breakfast included at the hotel this morning. We will meet a local guide for a narrated tour of Kennebunkport this morning. Drive past the sandy beaches and rocky coastline, past the George Bush estate at Walker's Point, hear the history of these shipbuilding towns and the legend of the Wedding Cake House. We'll also visit the seaside Franciscan Monastery with its beautiful landscaping, outdoor shrines and chapel. Next, we continue up the coast to tour the Museum at Portland Head Lighthouse. This small museum is contained within the lighthouse keeper's quarters. We'll learn about the history of Maine beacons and the families that operated them. There will also be free time for shopping along cobblestone streets and lunch on your own in Portland's historic waterfront district, the Old Port Exchange. Portland is a small city that mixes urban sophistication with hometown friendliness. The Old Port area has been restored to 19th century splendor, with cobbled streets and beautiful Victorian brick buildings housing an eclectic mix of restaurants, art galleries, and specialty shops. Here you can enjoy views of Casco Bay while enjoying a quick lunch or browse through the quaint shops selling crafts, antiques, and Maine-made products. Next, we'll travel through the lakes region to the mountain village of Bethel. We will stop to visit Maine Balsam Fir Products en route, a small company that hand-makes balsam-filled pillows and products. Enjoy the natural and healthy fragrance of balsam as you see the start-to-finish process behind these handmade Maine specialty products on a special guided tour of the Maine Balsam Fir Factory. A welcome reception is served on arrival at our home for two nights in the mountains of western Maine. Settle in to the comforts of the Grand Summit Hotel at Sunday River, a lovely mountainside resort on the outskirts of Bethel. The hotel features a heated outdoor pool and whirlpool, giant fireplaced lobby, beautiful walking trails and on-site lounge. A buffet dinner followed by a crackling campfire is included this evening at the hotel.CB, D
Enjoy a full breakfast in the hotel dining room. This morning we'll discover the history of this unique area, known for its mountaineering, skiing and gemstone mining. Try your hand at a mineral and gemstone sluicing program. Learn about the gemstones, including the exquisite Maine Tourmaline, commonly found in this area. Don an apron and a bucket for this hands-on program, where you can keep any treasures you find! Next, we'll tour the Bethel Historical Society Museum in the village. We'll tour one of the beautiful old homes next door and hear a 30-minute historic presentation. Enjoy lunch on your own at one of the village restaurants, followed by free time to explore the village shops on your own. Regroup in the late afternoon for a special guided moose-watching tour. This is the perfect time of day to spot Maine's gentle giants. Enjoy the beautiful scenery as we tour through Grafton Notch State Park; stop for scenic photos at mountain overlooks and a local covered bridge, "the Artists Bridge". Travel along some "off the beaten path" roads where your guide knows the most likely places to spot a moose. Freshen up back at the resort for dinner this evening at the lovely Sudbury Inn, a classic New England establishment in downtown Bethel.
After a full breakfast, we will travel west along one of Northern New England's most scenic routes to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Stop to see the picturesque Jackson Village covered bridge and tour the Weather Discovery Center Museum in North Conway. Learn about the weather and climate that forced New Englanders to design bridges protected from the elements and see the effects of the fastest wind speed (212 miles per hour), as it was recorded atop Mt. Washington. Free time for lunch on your own and tax-free shopping in downtown North Conway or relax in the village green park which offers comfortable benches with views of the Moat Mountain range. This afternoon, we'll cross the Kancamagus Highway - New England's most scenic byway - and check-in to our hotel, Holiday Inn Express in Lincoln, NH. Visit the Clark's Trading Post Gift Shop before boarding the train. Tonight we'll relive the romance of dining on the rails aboard the Cafe Lafayette Dinner Train. Board a beautifully restored vintage Pullman railroad car and enjoy a leisurely two hour evening ride among the lush New England forest and magnificent mountain vistas accompanied by an elegant five course feast.
Enjoy a full buffet breakfast this morning before we travel through the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. We will arrive home early this evening.B
