We will arrive in Harrisonburg, Virginia in time for a hearty lunch, followed by a conservator-led tour of the Virginia Quilt Museum in the Shenandoah Valley. We will then check-in to our accommodations for the next two nights, the beautiful Peaks of Otter Lodge which is perched along the Blue Ridge Parkway. At the base of gorgeous mountain peaks we will enjoy our dinner at the lodge alongside the lake. Afterwards, take a stroll around the lake, browse in the gift shop, have a drink in the lounge or relax on the patio or balcony outside your room and take in the cool mountain air and beautiful scenery.L, D
Your day starts with a good, hearty, homestyle breakfast at the lodge while enjoying a lovely view of the Peaks of Otter Lake. We will then travel north on the Blue Ridge Parkway and head towards Lexington, one of the best small towns you'll ever visit! We will have a cadet-led tour of the Virginia Military Institute and VMI Museum. At Washington and Lee University we will see the campus of the fourth-oldest college in America. A drive through town will reveal antebellum homes, historic churches and a thriving downtown filled with cool boutique shops and good places to eat where we will have time for lunch and shopping on our own. Enjoy a wine tasting at Peaks of Otter Winery, then back to the lodge for dinner and relaxation.B, D
After our breakfast at the lodge this morning we will check-out and head to a tour of the National D-Day Memorial. This stirring memorial covers 88 acres and honors all Allied Soldiers who participated in the Normandy invasion. We will then board the Virginia Dare for a luncheon cruise on the beautiful Smith Mountain Lake. Enjoy a delicious lunch while taking in the mountain views surrounding one of Virginia's favorite lakes. We will then head to Lynchburg, where we will tour Thomas Jefferson's summer home, Poplar Forest. After checking-in to our hotel for the evening, we will have dinner at the Depot Grille, former home of Lynchburg's old Norfolk & Western passenger depot. The Depot Grille serves excellent fare in the ambience of railroad memorabilia. In the evening you will experience a candlelight tour of "Point of Honor", an 1806 Federal-style home, where you will get a glimpse of life of the elite class in the 1800s.B, L, D
This morning after breakfast at our hotel, we check-out and head to a tour of Walton's Mountain Museum. Those who are fans of the classic television show, The Walton's, will recognize the name "Walton's Mountain." Though no such place exists, this is as close as we can come because Earl Hamner, creator of the show, grew up here and based his work on his childhood on this mountain. It is filled with recreations of sets from the show as well as props and costumes. We will then enjoy lunch on our own and some shopping in Downtown Charlottesville before our arrival home scheduled for this evening.B
