Day 1

Today enjoy free time in New York City to shop and have lunch on your own. We will meet up with our guide who will take us on a walking tour of Central Park. The sites we will see include Strawberry Fields, dedicated to the memory of John Lennon, where countries from all around the world contributed trees, and Italy donated the iconic "Imagine" mosaic. The Bethesda Terrace and Fountain overlook The Lake in New York City's Central Park and the fountain is located in the center of the terrace. The Arsenal is a symmetrical brick building built between 1847 and 1851 as a storehouse for arms and ammunition for the New York State Militia. The Central Park Zoo began in the 1860's as a menagerie making it the first official zoo to open in New York. At Literary Walk. the statue of Christopher Columbus is the odd man out, since 4 of the 5 tributes here depict prominent writers. Nearby are Scottish poet Robert Burns and his compatriot, Scottish novelist Sir Walter Scott. A little farther north is Fitz-Greene Halleck, the first statue of an American to be placed in the Park. Today hardly anyone knows his poetry or his name, but everyone remembers their visit to Literary Walk. There are plenty of dogs to see in Central Park, but the Balto statue has been a favorite for almost a century. The piece pays homage to the famed sled dog who battled tundra conditions in Alaska and helped save the state’s children. Other stops include Bow Bridge the first cast-iron bridge in the Park (and the second oldest in America) built between 1859 and 1862, Cherry Hill named for the cherry trees that bloom across its landscape in the spring, Cherry hill was originally intended as a scenic turnaround featuring a decorative watering trough for horse-drawn carriages, and Stuart Little's Model Boat Basin the site of the whimsical boat scene in the children's classic.

Following the tour we will come directly home.
